R Northbound Dogs 2007/2008 Season

Picard:
NM, DOB 3/2/2000 – Accidental breeding in my Kennel, one of 7 of 9’s pups. Picard is a strong, honest, hard working dog. He normally runs wheel or in the back of the team for his strength although he makes a good swing dog and an acceptable leader. Picard is one of those “invisible dogs” that just goes about doing his job day in and day out – nothing remarkable, but never gives you any problems – the mark of a real professional. Sisco:
M, DOB 5/28/02 – My breeding – Base x Kira (7 of 9’s pup). Sisco is a rock solid, nothing fazes him kind of dog. Seems real laid back and easy going, but get him in harness and he’s all business. I see a lot of his dad (Bass) in Sisco. Sisco has been a steady leader as a two year old, taking everything we’ve thrown at him – I expect great things from him as he matures. Sisco got harness rubs and didn’t finish the Iditarod in 2006, but he was one of the stars of the 2006 Don Bowers 300 team.

Dukat:
M, DOB 5/28/02 – My breeding – Base x Kira (7 of 9’s pup). Dukat has been a very present surprise as a two year old. As a pup Dukat was not only last when we free ran the pups, but came in long after all the others. I voted him least likely to become a sled dog – just didn’t seem that interested in running. As a yearling he made the team, but was nothing to brag about. However as a two year old he really started coming into his own with a nice smooth fast trot and solid work ethic. Dukat has run lead, but not shown a particular desire to lead yet. I think that may come as he continues to matures. Dukat typically runs in the back of the team or in wheel where his strength and hard work keep us moving. Dukat got sick in Koyuk and didn’t finish the Iditarod, but his performance was stellar up to that point. With his brother Sisco he was the start of the 2006 Don Bowers 300. I expect great things from him next year.

Basil:
NF, DOB 5/??/03 – Jeff King breeding – Brahma x Tinkle. Purchased from Jeff in May 2004. Basil is an interesting story. At the start and again the restart for the 2004 Iditarod I was very taken by a small female in Jeff King’s team – just loved her attitude. Turned out she was Tinkle and one of the stars of the 2004 team. I asked Jeff if he had any more like her and Jeff sold me her daughter, Basil. This line throws small feisty females that like to lead, work hard, but don’t necessarily get along with other females and Basil is all of that. We are working on getting along, but Basil easily made the team as a yearling and I expect great things from her. I was impressed enough that I got three other Tinkle pups from a different breeding – see below. Basil finished the 2006 Iditarod.

Platinum: NM, DOB 9/6/02 – Jeff King breeding – Conan x Lassen. Purchased from Jeff in August 2004. After I bought Basil I wanted to meet the rest of her family to get a better idea of the genetics I had to work with. Good idea, but I have real trouble going to Jeff’s Kennel and not coming home with a dog. This trip I bought three. Platinum is full brother to Tin, one of the stars of this years Iditarod team. Platinum runs a strong lead, working hard up the hills, lots of drive. He is one of the dogs I count on to lead me to Nome. He is a pacer rather than trotting, and not the fastest dog I have – but a sweet friendly reliable guy who gets the job done. Platinum ran the serum run with Jeff’s puppy team in 2004 and is one of two dogs on the team that has been to Nome. Platinum finished the 2006 Iditarod.

Lycos:
NM, DOB 3/18/03 – Jeff King unintentional breeding – ? x Tahoe. Purchased from Jeff in August 2004. Lycos is another dog I purchased on that trip – he had been running single lead for the tourists at Jeff’s as a yearling and easily made the race team as a yearling. Lycos is a strong smooth leader. Lycos is one of those dogs that gets excited easily and really goes all out. Most dogs substantially improve between their yearling and two year old years – if Lycos follows that pattern he will easily be a star performer and go to leader. He is one of the leaders I’m counting on for the trip to Nome. I like Lycos in the front of the team all the way to lead. Lycos was the best leader on the 2006 Iditarod team, finding the trail in the storm on Rainy Pass with Bass. It broke my heart when he got sick and I had to drop him in Cripple.

Dijon:
M, DOB 6/18/04 – Jeff King breeding – Rhombus x Tinkle. Purchased from Jeff in March 2005. With all I think of Java, you can bet when Jeff put one of his brothers up for sale I jumped at the chance. Dijon is a much larger version of Java, a little lighter in color and not nearly as much in control of himself. I’ve not had Dijon in harness yet, but Jeff said he’s a very hard worker. I think most of the out of control is just maturity and have seen improvement in the few months he’s been in my kennel. Should be another great dog in a couple of years. Dijon did not make the race team in 2006, but is continuing to mature and I expect great things out of him in the years to come.

Dash: F, DOB 6/18/04 – Jeff King breeding – Rhombus x Tinkle. Purchased from Jeff in April 2005. When I went to Jeff’s kennel to pick up Dijon, Jeff added Dash to the list. Dash is not as driven as her brothers, but very affectionate and well built. She is just poetry in motion, and loves to come to the end of her chain, stand on her rear legs and wave both front legs at you – kind of a “come on, let’s play!” She is always trying to entice you into a game. Dash is a very sweet girl and was running lead as a pup in Jeff’s kennel. Dash finished the 2006 Iditarod, running lead early in the race and some lead late in the race.

Mocha: F, DOB 8/18/04 – Jeff King unintentional breeding – Tin x Nutmeg. Purchased from Zack Steer in April 2005. After I bought Basil, Jeff caught me at the signup picnic and said that Basil’s sister had gotten pregnant and was I interested. Turns out that this sister and Basil fought constantly as pups and I couldn ‘t see taking that into my kennel. Zack Steer bought Nugmeg and this spring sold one pup to thin his kennel. Mocha is just a doll dog. Colored kind of like a Mocha, sweet, sweet disposition – one of those dogs that just looks at you with those puppy eyes and promises to love you forever. She is a very special girl, and her father is Platinum’s brother Tin. She is very well built and moves very smooth. As an August pup she is at risk not to make the 2006 team just because she is so young, but next year watch out. This girl is going to be something special. Mocha finished the 2006 Iditarod strongly and was one of the few dogs that looked like they could turn around and run back to Anchorage. I expect great things from her as she matures.

Jewels: M, DOB 7/30/02 – Zack Steer breeding – Comet x Audrey. Purchased from Zack in April 2005. When I went to Zack’s kennel to get Mocha, Zack had a two yr old leader, Ruby, that had been to Nome that I was interested in. When I got there the leaders brother Jewels was running around in his circle from excitement and driving hard off his back legs. I was even more impressed when Zack said that they had just come off a 50 mile run. Jewels, while not a leader, is definitely the better athlete. Jewels is the only Iditarod veteran on the team, having been to Nome as a yearling in 2004 and making Zack’s race team in 2005 (Zack scratched in Ophir in 2005). Jewels is a little shy (my telling him to be quite so we don’t bother the neighbors doesn’t help) but a really nice dog and I will enjoy going to Nome with him. As an interesting side note, Jewels grandmother is 7 of 9’s sister – it’s a small world, even if you’re a dog. Jewels did not finish the 2006 Iditarod.

Thyme: F, DOB 8/18/04 – Jeff King unintentional breeding – Tin x Nutmeg. Purchased from Zack Steer in April 2006. Thyme is Mocha’s sister. I really like Mocha, and this is Jeff’s bloodlines. Zack was selling Thyme because she is not a good eater and he is worried about keeping weight on her during the race. I walked this girl and watched her move and put her in my truck. She is absolutely poetry in motion. She is a little shy (Mocha is a little timid) and a little small, but gee she moves pretty.

Throttle:
F, DOB July 2002 - Throttle, ran Iditarod in 2005 with Bob Bundtzen and in 2006 with Bryan Bearss. She is such a great eater that she gained weight during both races. She runs lead, but has not been asked to lead in difficult situation, so nobody knows how good she might be. Throttle is a real love and when I asked her if she wanted to be my dog she said definitely! I got a serious face washing and that closed the deal right there. I brought both dogs into the house last night so Marti could meet them. Throttle said she belonged here and would stay on the couch forever! Even though unrelated, she reminds me a lot Bass in looks and manners. If she leads with the same determination that he does I have a great dog.

Rosemary:
F, DOB 8/18/04 – Jeff King unintentional breeding – Tin x Nutmeg. Purchased from Zack Steer in May 2006. Rosemary is Thyme’s and Mocha’s sister. This girl is something special. She is more outgoing and less timid than her sisters and has that same bright intelligent expression and moves just as pretty. She is all character and a real joy to have in the house and dog lot.

Blaze:
F, DOB Fall 2001 - Gerry Willomitzer breeding Logan (Gatt) x Icy (Holz). I purchased Blaze in August 2007 to fill the hole Bass and
Balu left in the team when they retired. Blaze is a strong gee/haw leader who is nicely built and doesn’t injure easily. She finished 2 Yukon Quests and 1 Iditarod with Gerry. She started the 2006 Quest, but was banged up in Gerry’s accident. Blaze was the only pup in the litter and the only litter in the kennel. She is very attached to people, but doesn’t care either way about other dogs. Blaze is my “consultant” to help get me through the coastal storms that Iditarod is famous for, and maybe to teach me how to run the Quest.

Frodo: M, DOB 5/22/06 – Lance Mackey breeding Zorro x Twiggy. Zorro is Lance’s famous leader / stud and Twiggy is out of old George Attla lines. When I saw the dogs for sale at Lance’s kennel it was like walking into a candy store, but Frodo was the first dog I had to have. He is well built, and almost too intelligent, with a strong personality. Frodo has something that makes me think he will be the best dog in my kennel, which is good because right now he is a handful.

Strider: M, DOB 3/19/06 – Lance Mackey breeding Thunder x Nasty. Strider was one of two dogs I went to see at Lance’s kennel in Sept 2007, and the second dog I chose. He is a big lanky guy driven by running and eating. He is strong and affectionate and screams like he is being pulled apart by demons if I take too long to feed him.

Ginger: F, DOB 6/9/06 – Lance Mackey breeding Hansel (Buser) x Rosie (Mackey). Hansel was sired by Martin’s famous leader Logan and Rosie by Jeff King’s Herbie. I was not going to buy another small female, but Ginger is something special. She has the bloodlines to be a foundation bitch for the kennel. She is a little submissive because she is so young. She screams worse than Strider and has spent several nights in a kennel in the garage because she wouldn’t be quiet at night (Screamer was her great grandmother!). But she is absolutely poetry in motion, drives hard, and I’m sure she will run lead as soon as she learns to trust me. This girl has almost as much potential as Frodo and I couldn’t leave her behind.
