The Journey Continues
May 7, 2007

When God decides to move, things happen fast. Dallas and Danny Seavey are putting together a sled dog show in Anchorage (http://www.ididaride.com/tours/anchorage/wildride.htm). It will be held on a lot by the Comfort Inn by Ship Creek and should be lots of fun. They have been recruiting for cast members and I interviewed with them April 19th. You know how the best laid plans of mice and men gang aft astray – particularly when you have to get permits from the municipality to proceed. Suffice it to say that I didn’t hear back when I had expected to and sent a resume to Dowl Engineers (primarily civil and geotechnical growing into related fields - www.dowl.com) who were looking for a person to head a new in-house GIS group (Geographic Information System – think Google Earth on steroids). I did that for another company 13 years ago and have a proven track record. Needless to say Dowl is very interested and we scheduled an interview for last Monday 5/7/07.

Last Thursday 5/3/07, I saw that Resource Data, Inc (RDI – a custom database, Web, and GIS programming services company www.resdat.com) was also looking for GIS specialists and emailed them a resume.
Shortly after that Dallas Seavey called and offered me a position in the new show. On Friday RDI contacted me and we set up a preliminary interview for Monday morning. Suffice it to say that both interviews went well, but I thought that not being a programmer (I’m more of a database design / rapid prototype developer) I was not a good fit for RDI. However they called back today and said the president of the company wants to talk to me.
I had to call Dallas back and turn down his offer. He was generous and willing to work with me and I would love the job and could use the experience. I was hoping to have a major sponsorship come through, or a great paying job for Marti (she has applied), but if my job is the primary source of income for the family I need more money, and Dallas needs someone who can commit to the show through late September and not bail on them because funds expected from other sources didn’t pan out.
I don’t know what this means in terms of racing, but I’m not giving up. We will just have to see how things come together.

The dogs are bored, and with their personalities are reacting in different ways. Platinum is barking at the slightest provocation. I swear he can read my mind. If I look out the window at him he realizes it almost immediately and turns to bark at (talk to) me. Dijon just runs and runs around his circle, jumping on and off the house. The big guy is a perpetual motion machine. Rom finds a rock (almost softball sized) and carries it around in his mouth, only dropping it when I put his dish down. You can hear it thump as it hits. Bass stands watching all the commotion like the patriarch of the lot, only getting involved if the neighbors dog walks by.

In the other lot, Lycos is laid back, lying around until I actually come into the lot. Thyme has adopted a softball sized rock. She will push at it with her front paws, “talking” to it in a high pitched voice the whole time. From the tone of her voice, I’m just as glad I don’t know what she is saying. 7 of 9 is my doorbell. She gives a “woo woo” anytime someone approaches the yard / house. Throttle is more matronly and laid back until I put her dish down and then you can watch the kibble fly. Jewels is more reserved and reminds me of a nervous British butler. He is almost always moving, but is shy and reserved. He won’t look directly at me or come straight up, but if I turn around there is a gentle nuzzle as he lets me know he still cares.

I keep thinking I should get the 4-wheeler out and run them – it would be good for all of us, but the Beach Lake trails are still soft and I don’t want to damage them. We have few enough trails for cart training in the fall as it is. Maybe in another couple of weeks if it stays cool.
Keep ‘em Northbound
